I was actually looking forward to the TV show On The Lot. I imagined it would be another shot at a great TV show concept like Project Greenlight. That was an absolutely outstanding show that HBO really shouldn't have killed.
But then again, maybe I enjoy watching shows on film making more than the average joe.
But it is so ironic that a show about good film making has such terrible pacing and awful storytelling. The show seems focused on talk, talk, and more talk. The attempts at building "tension" are old hat and a poor copy of Survivor, Apprentice, and American Idol. It's as if the producers of this show assumed that no one would watch more than one episode.
The relatively annoying host of the show keeps recapping what the show is about over and over and over again (and then over again after that). It is like they assume that anyone watching the show at any point has just walked in and has no idea what the show is about. Or, that the target audience is a group of amnesiacs or have serious short-term memory problems like the guy in Memento. She recaps the purpose of the show, the bios of the directors, the films that they shot, the reactions of the judges, and everything else in between. The amount of new content in each episode is laughably small and you really have to be dedicated or a heck of an optimist to tune in to the show again.
Lack of originality, poor scripting, boring writing, failure to use innovative visuals. While this sounds like the judges comments, it is what I would say about the show. Perhaps it's time the judges critiqued the filming and pacing of this show for one episode.
Another great opportunity to make a great show about film making lost. The brilliant Hollywood types are going to assume that it is the genre that cannot succeed instead of blaming the production values of this show.
Sad.
And why don't we just give the award to Zach Lipovsky now and get it over with?

I read your review, and I hope you don't mind me doing so.I must say, that it gave me hope ,that there are still honest, alert, and decent human beings out there.
First let me tell you a little bit about myself.I am one of the 12000 so called filmmakers, who foolishly submitted my film,in oerder to become a contestant! I grew up ,like most of the contestants we hear claiming, with the believe that I was made to be a filmmaker.I won awards in filmfestivals, when I was 14.I came to America,"the land of opportunity",with the dream of becoming a director. What foolish dreams sometimes we have! I got my B.A degree in film, and so on. In 2006, I even had a film entered in four different Internatinational film festivals. When I got an email, from Without A Box.com, to enter for On the Lot,I thought, that it could be my big break in life. What foolish things we think of !!!
Well I get right to the point. To the people that care, and are alert as you, I must say that this show was a scam before it's premier. The truth is that unfortunately we live in a world that you can make a shit sandwich, and stamp the name STEVEN SPIELBERG on it, and sell it to people.I suggest that people just simply go to the web site, and check for themselves.Mr Mark Burnnet, bluntly admits on a video,"After an exhausting Internatinional search,we come up with 14 contestants, to fight for a one million dollar project with Dream Works"
Woopty DOOO.After all, if you claim you are that good, you must be as good as Spielberg. Make E.T with 10 milllion, and turn it into 800 million.Never mind the fact that Mr Spielberg, doesn't even own Dream Works any more.I suggest , people to see the actual location, where these contestants come from. A high percentage of the 50 contestants live either in N.Y,or L.A.So much for the exhausting global search!!! Well I guess it's much cheaper to fly them from N.Y,that outside the country.Plus France doesn't have any good film-makers. Neither does Japan, nor Italy. At least in American Idol, there is a variety of contestants from different states. Furthermore, thay don't declair,an International search, and then have the singers come from Las Vegas, or L.A.
It's a sad world we live in. Sometimes I wonder, if most people are in a walking coma .
Last night I was watching so you think you can dance, and I was embarresed, to see that the dacers I.Q,and their class appeared much higher than directors wanna bees. Apparently, dancers aren't farting and peeing mentality types of people.
After reviewing the show for myself, instead of dearming to apply for next season.I tell myself ,thank god I did'nt get selected.
I wrote more than enough, the rest I leave in the minds of those who are curious enogh to go and read the site. But before I sign out, one last note.
If it looks like shit, smells like shit, guess what?
